LIQUIFIED PROPANE GAS

Liquified Propane Gas (LPG) is a clean-burning, highly efficient hydrocarbon fuel that is compressed into a liquid state for easy storage and transportation. Often referred to interchangeably with Liquefied Petroleum Gas, it exists as a gas under normal atmospheric conditions but liquefies under moderate pressure (around 150–200 psi). This compression reduces its volume dramatically, making 1 litre of liquid propane expand into roughly 270 litres of usable gas upon release

Core Properties & Chemical Identity

  • Molecular Formula: C₃H₈ (Three-carbon alkane).

  • Boiling Point: –42°C (–43.6°F). It instantly vaporises into gas at anything above freezing unless kept under pressure.

  • Energy Density: High calorific value (~46.1 MJ/kg). It provides nearly three times the heat energy of natural gas per cubic foot.

  • Odor: Naturally odourless and colourless. A harmless chemical scent called ethyl mercaptan is added during production to give it a distinct "rotten egg" smell for leak safety.

  • Density: It is heavier than air. If a leak occurs, propane gas sinks and pools along the floor or in low-lying areas

  1. Residential & Off-Grid Use: It serves as a primary fuel source for domestic cooking, home space heating, and hot water systems in rural or grid-independent regions.

  2. Outdoor Recreation: Powers portable camping stoves, backyard BBQ grills, and patio heaters using portable steel cylinders.

  3. Transportation (Autogas): Operates as a cleaner alternative vehicle fuel. It produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional petrol or diesel.

  4. Industrial & Agriculture: Used to heat manufacturing furnaces, power forklifts, dry crops, and heat agricultural greenhouses

Main Applications

Storage & Safety Basics

Because it is highly flammable and stored under heavy pressure, specific protocols govern its use:

  • Cylinders & Tanks: Stored in heavy-grade steel or composite tanks equipped with an Overfill Protection Device (OPD) valve to prevent accidental overfilling during refills.

  • Ventilation: Propane appliances should always be used in well-ventilated areas to avoid carbon monoxide buildup or gas pooling.

  • Temperature Factors: Tank pressure fluctuates naturally with temperature changes. Cylinders are intentionally filled to only 80% capacity to allow safe liquid expansion on hot days.
